Thinking About a Switch.
You know, I like Typepad a lot.
I'm thinking about moving this blog there, too. Expect a change soon! Update: I've Switched! Come over to http://shaunb.blogs.com/riad/. posted by Shaun @ 12:03 PM Friday, September 05, 2003
Don't These Guys Have Something Better to Do?
The economy sucks; businesses cut more jobs in August; we've got troops in Iraq, Afghanistan, and off the coast of Liberia; and Congress is worried about college football?

Yay!
Friday we got a letter from Immigration... (now renamed the Bureau of Citizenship and Immigration Service)-- my husband's citizenship interview is scheduled for the end of October! Yay! Last we heard, they said it would take "750 to 999 days" to review his case, so yesterday's letter was a pleasant surprise.
My husband's looking forward to getting an American passport-- it cuts hassles when he travels to and from Morocco-- but I am looking forward to having another voter available next November. In fact I've been saving a voter registration card just for him. Don't be too impressed. I'm just anxious to get the current yahoo out of office! posted by Shaun @ 12:10 PM In Search of a Good Movie. Late yesterday afternoon my husband called me and suggested we go out to a movie. So off I go to look at the listing for the theater nearest our house. I knew I couldn't get him to go see Seabiscuit (even though it was my turn to pick and so that means he must submit to my will*). To be honest about the remaining 19 choices, I was so disappointed I couldn't even think of a movie I'd settle for. They're all sequels or remakes of 70s shows! (Oh, yeah, and we'd already seen Finding Nemo.) So instead I decided to check out what was playing at the local Madstone Theater. I really like that theater and I probably should show my appreciation and support more, as there are only ten in the country from what I can tell. I picked a movie, called my husband back, and announced my choice. "Are you sure you don't want to see SWAT?" he says. But, like I said, he must give in to my will. Like a good husband. Besides, once he saw smoothies, sandwiches, decent chocolate, and Heineken at the concession stand, he relaxed. He got popcorn. He totally settled in once he tasted it and realized it wasn't the oil-slicked oversalted styrofoam stuff. We watched Dirty Pretty Things. Which I'm proud to recommend. I saw another good movie earlier this week-- we rented The Quiet American. So the lesson is, there are some good flicks out there this year, if you search hard enough! (Hello, Hollywood!) *Don't feel bad for my husband having to submit to my will. He gets his way on alternating theater visits. Our unspoken rule is, ultimately, the person whose turn it is to pick gets to choose. So I have been to see The Hot Chick, XXX, and other movies I would not have seen otherwise. Could I say that marriage is expanding my cultural horizons? Um... not! posted by Shaun @ 11:54 AM Friday, August 29, 2003
Battle of the Sexes: Him 1, Her 1
While my husband was gone on a three-week trip to Morocco, I took the liberty to make some changes around our condo. I didn't have the money to do everything I wanted, but at least I got rid of the things that bothered me most-- the dark curtains in the living area and the fake plants. I don't know why he liked them. He even had a fake strawberry plant with big pink flowers!
Our tastes differ hugely. He likes floral carpets and linens, and elaborate designs with shiny fabrics, embroidery, beads, and tassels. I'd rather have solid colors or very simple designs. I lean toward minimalist with a touch of personality, he collects little tchotchkes which are in every corner. Since his vacation, we now have breezy, light curtains and real plants that tolerate low light. I also have a new duvet cover to hide our jungle-themed comforter. He's had no objections to any of the changes. Last night, though, was his revenge! Somehow he ran into a woman who is going through a divorce and getting rid of furniture, which he was more than happy to take off her hands. He called me last night as I was coming home from work. "Guess what I've got!" he says. "Oh, no," I think. I think "oh no" not because I must have new furniture, but because my husband isn't very discriminating when he looks at used things. For example, one day he brought home a vacuum cleaner he found by a dumpster. He claimed it was newer than my vacuum, which in ten years has never had a problem, yet the vacuum he brought home was broken. I'm like, "baby, they threw it away for a reason!" So last night he brought home a twin-sized bed, complete with box spring, mattress, even linens; an outdoor fireplace; an outdoor table with two chairs; and a dresser. I'm a bit squeamish about using a stranger's linens and mattress, but my hubby says the woman told him they were never used. While he's finding places for all this stuff in our little condo, he notices I look uncomfortable and says, "what's wrong?" I finally say, "you know, I kind of wanted to take our time to get things in our house that we pick together, and things that kind of fit in a theme or something. We look like Mars and Venus collided." He says, "Yeah, I love it! Everyone who comes by loves it! It looks like a bazaar!" I say, "It is bizarre!" I have to admit, though, the outdoor furniture and the dresser aren't a bad find. In fact, I'm thinking about having the dresser appraised: it's got some nice detail, including what appears to be mother-of-pearl on the knobs. posted by Shaun @ 12:37 AM Wednesday, August 27, 2003
Moroccan Weddings.
So I was just surfing around, and came across a site called an invitation to the barbeque: the world mediated through food. She has some great pictures of a Moroccan wedding. Sniffle! They make me want to do it all over again.
Go get your hanky and visit. posted by Shaun @ 2:18 AM Tuesday, August 26, 2003
